At Nora's shop, every customer picks their own free samples.

Nora runs a shop for natural cosmetics. Her customers should try something new, namely what interests them: from €25 of goods they pick a face sample, from €50 a second one for the body, from €75 a travel size. Every sample is a product of its own with its own stock.

The setup in the admin.

One group, eight rewards, three thresholds: three face samples from €25, three body samples from €50 and two travel sizes from €75. All eight are products, no rule is needed. That the customer gets one sample per tier and not just one in total is down to the selection mode.

At €58.40 of goods: the customer has chosen in the first tier, not yet in the second, and the third is still locked.

  • One sample per tier

The three face samples form one tier. Once the customer has chosen there, the other two carry the button "Switch": one click swaps the sample, a second one from the same tier is not possible.

  • The next tier is open

Nothing has been chosen in the €50 tier yet, so it reads "Choose gift". A body sample is added to the face sample instead of replacing it.

  • The remaining amount

€16.60 are missing until the travel size. The bar names the amount, and so do the two locked tiles.

  • Two samples, two items

After choosing in both tiers, the samples sit in the cart at €0.00 with their product numbers, without a quantity field. Each one can be removed on its own.

How many samples at which goods value.

What counts is the goods value without the rewards. The samples themselves cost €0.00 and never push the cart over a threshold; a discount from another group does not push it below one.

And the stock? Nora puts 300 day cream samples into stock. Every order in which it is chosen lowers the stock by one; after 300 such orders it is used up. With "Clearance sale" only its tile disappears then, serum and cleansing milk stay in the €25 tier.

The settings for it.

Three plugin settings and two fields on the sample products in Shopware.

  • Selection mode

Technical name selectionModeValue One reward per cart value tier (per group)

The core of this setup: for every threshold reached the customer may pick a reward. Rewards with the same threshold form one tier, which is why there is exactly one sample from each set of three.

  • Automatic reward selection

Technical name autoAddValue Off (manual selection only)

Samples are a matter of taste, so the customer chooses. With "All reached rewards" the automation would add the sample with the lowest position per tier; the customer could still swap it.

  • Display mode

    Technical name displayModeValue List

In the product slider the customer pages through the tiles. As a list, all eight samples are shown one below the other, each in a row with its image.

  • Clearance sale

    Location Catalogues › Products

Switched on, the sample becomes unavailable at stock 0: its tile disappears, and a sample already in a cart is removed with a notice.

  • Visibility

Value Hide in listings and search

The samples have to be assigned to the sales channel, otherwise the cart cannot load them. With this visibility they show up neither in categories nor in the search, but they do in the cart.

Orders and stock in the manual

What matters here.

Every sample is a product with its own stock, and every sample chosen lowers it by one. If "Clearance sale" is switched on for a sample, its tile disappears as soon as the stock is used up; the other samples of the same tier stay. Without "Clearance sale" it stays selectable even when the warehouse is empty.

Which of this the Shopware standard does on its own

Frequently asked questions about free samples

How do I hand out free samples from an order value?
Every sample becomes a product of its own and, in a reward group, a reward of the type "Product". The minimum cart value sets from which order value it can be chosen, for example €25. The customer picks it in the cart and needs no code.
Can the customer choose several product samples?
Yes, with the selection mode "One reward per cart value tier (per group)": one sample per threshold reached. With Nora's three tiers that makes up to three. Alternatively every kind of sample gets its own group; in the default mode there is then one per group.
What happens when a sample runs out?
With "Clearance sale" on the product, the sample becomes unavailable at stock 0: its tile disappears, and a sample already in a cart is removed with a notice. Without "Clearance sale" it stays selectable.
Do the samples have to be visible in the shop?
No. They have to be assigned to the sales channel, otherwise the cart cannot load them. With the visibility "Hide in listings and search" they show up neither in categories nor in the search, but they do in the cart.
Can there be a free sample with every order?
Yes. With 0 as the minimum cart value a sample is unlocked as soon as a product is in the cart. A cart with nothing but samples does not occur: if the last purchased item is removed, the samples go with it.
How do the samples appear in the order?
Like any product: as an item with product number, quantity 1 and €0.00. The tax column stays empty, and the sales counter of the sample goes up by one.
Can the customer decline a sample?
Yes. Every sample can be removed from the cart. With the automation off, only the customer adds samples anyway.
