- The select box shows real variants
- The entries read like in the shop, for instance "Colour: red, size: M". Only variants that are active and available are loaded, in a fixed alphabetical order.
- Without a choice there is no next step
- A click on "Choose gift" without a selected variant submits nothing, the field is highlighted. That way no variant nobody picked ever lands in the cart.
- Or you fix the variant yourself
- If you enter a variant directly in the admin, the tile shows it without a select box, for instance "Size: M". Then this one copy is what there is.
- The automation holds back
- Rewards with several variants are never added by the automatic selection. The help text of the setting says so as well.

The choice on the tile becomes an item with exactly that variant, including its own product number.
Why this is validated.
The chosen variant comes from the browser, and whatever comes from the browser is checked by the plugin: does the submitted variant actually belong to the configured parent product? Without that check somebody could swap the identifier and put any product into the cart for free. The comment in the source code says exactly that.
